Beyond the limits of your current platform

Greater flexibility for what’s next.

Shopify is an effective platform for many businesses. A migration becomes worth considering when the cost, complexity or limitations of your existing setup begin to conflict with your commercial or operational requirements.

Here are the situations in which it is usually worth looking at:

  • Complex product requirements

Bespoke configurators, dependent product options, dynamic pricing or made-to-order workflows.

  • Complex commerce operations

Marketplace models, distributed inventory, custom fulfilment or unusual ordering requirements.

  • Greater architectural control

The need to control the commerce architecture, business logic, integrations and future development roadmap.

  • A changing commercial model

New channels, markets, business models or capabilities that are difficult to support with the current setup.

Whether to migrate depends on your actual requirements, budget, internal capabilities and total cost of ownership. For many businesses, staying on Shopify is the right answer.

Why MedusaJS?

A commerce foundation shaped around your business.

MedusaJS is an open-source commerce framework that gives engineering teams control over how commerce functionality is designed and extended. It can be a strong option when a business needs a bespoke architecture rather than a largely standardised commerce setup. Read more about our MedusaJS approach.

  • Control over bespoke logic

Greater control over how commerce rules, pricing and products behave.

  • Architectural flexibility

Flexibility over the storefront and the wider system architecture.

  • Custom integrations and workflows

Integrations and operational workflows built around how you work.

  • Distinctive models

Support for distinctive product and fulfilment models.

  • Room to evolve

A foundation that can evolve with business requirements.

The trade-off

That flexibility also brings responsibility. With a bespoke platform, engineering, hosting, maintenance, integrations, security and ongoing ownership all need to be planned for, by you, by a partner or by both. We will not tell you MedusaJS is cheaper, faster or better for every business, because it is not.

The migration process

A considered, secure migration.

A migration is planned around your data, your integrations and your search visibility, not only the new storefront.

  1. 01

    Assess and plan

Review the existing platform, business requirements, integrations, data, SEO and operational constraints.

  2. 02

    Design

Define the target architecture, migration strategy, data model and integration requirements.

  3. 03

    Migrate and validate

Implement the new platform, migrate the agreed data, test key workflows and validate the customer experience before launch.

  4. 04

    Launch and evolve

Coordinate the launch, monitor the platform, resolve issues and continue improving the commerce experience.

SEO migration

Where relevant, we plan for URL mapping, redirects, canonical URLs, metadata, structured data and post-launch monitoring. The aim is to preserve existing organic visibility and search signals. We cannot guarantee zero downtime or that every search ranking is preserved.

More than a platform switch

A long-term technology partner.

We stay involved beyond launch, helping businesses evolve their platform, integrations and commerce capabilities as requirements change. The goal is not simply to replace one platform with another, but to create a sustainable foundation for the next stage of growth.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Should every Shopify business move to MedusaJS?

No. Shopify is an effective platform for many businesses. Migration is worth considering when your products, operations or commercial model conflict with what your current setup can support, and the right answer depends on your requirements, budget, internal capabilities and total cost of ownership.

Will MedusaJS be cheaper or faster than Shopify?

Not necessarily. MedusaJS is open source, so there is no platform licence, but a bespoke platform also means planning for engineering, hosting, maintenance, integrations and security. We do not make cost or performance comparisons that depend on your situation.

Is SEO migration part of a Shopify to MedusaJS migration?

SEO migration was part of the scope for By The Namesake (Shopify to MedusaJS) and Curated Crowd (PHP to MedusaJS). It covers URL mapping, redirects, canonical URLs, metadata, structured data and post-launch monitoring, to preserve organic visibility. Search results cannot be guaranteed.

Can you assess whether a migration makes sense before we commit?

Yes. The first stage of our process is to assess and plan: reviewing your current platform, requirements, integrations, data, SEO and operational constraints, before anything is built.

What has Pulsehub migrated to MedusaJS?

Pulsehub migrated the luxury leather brand By The Namesake from Shopify to MedusaJS, and replatformed the Curated Crowd fashion marketplace from PHP. See the By The Namesake and Curated Crowd case studies.
